The travertine… Between history and modernity

Travertine is the natural stone that represents history more than any other. It is one of the oldest stones used in construction, and many Roman architectural treasures we still admire today were built with it. Travertine is a rock with a calcareous conformation that possesses good hardness and mechanical strength, and although it is an easily malleable material, it is capable of enduring for a long time.

What could be more robust than a natural stone created over decades and centuries!

colosseo It can meet any aesthetic requirements in indoor environments, and thanks to its weather resistance, it is also suitable for outdoor use.

Travertine because of its excellent physical-mechanical characteristics has reasonable ease of cutting and shaping and is a particularly durable natural stone that proves to be truly resilient in everyday life.

As it was used in the past in the form of flooring, wall tiles, columns and mosaics in ancient Roman baths, it also finds a place in modern times in wellness areas and steam rooms of hotels and spas.

Travertine can transform the space into an oasis of well-being!

It is used in indoor environments thanks to its ability to combine classical and modern styles. It is a delight to the senses and offers countless design possibilities, thanks to the cloudy or veined effect obtained by cutting the block, typical open or filled pores, polished or velvety surface treatments, and rustic or rounded edge work.

Travertine is a timeless stone that nowadays finds great appreciation among architects and interior designers worldwide. Elegance and simplicity come together to express a balanced and never ostentatious concept of luxury. This versatile stone is available in different formats, sizes and finishes.

Travertine does not have a uniform color; each stone is unique in its appearance. It has a pleasing surface effect, and the colorations vary according to the extraction area from milky white to cream, straw yellow to medium and darker shades of brown and firm grays. There is no shortage of intense red or yellow coloring.

Prominent among the travertines we offer is the TRAVERTINO ROMANO CLASSICO from the Italian quarries of Tivoli, beige in color with shades that recall the colors of the earth.

TRAVERTINO NOCE DARK recalls darker dark brown tones while TRAVERTINO NOCE LIGHT has tones ranging from a delicate cream background to beige-laden veins.

Again, we have the TRAVERTINO SILVER with coloring tending toward gray. All lend themselves to combinations and contrasts of shades, to cover floors and walls of refined and exclusive spaces.

The shades of travertine vary depending on the type of cut: “vein cut” or “cross-cut”. These are two different ways of cutting blocks from which two completely different types of materials are derived even though they come from the same block. The final effect will be distinctly different enough to suggest different materials to each other.

When cross-cut, the material takes on a more shaded and dynamic appearance with a cloudy effect, and the slabs or tiles will vary in color from one another. In contrast, when vein-cut, the veins will become more obvious and the streaks will form even sharp lines so that the color will thus be more homogeneous throughout the slabs.

It lends itself to multiple surface treatments: polished, honed, brushed, tumbled, antiqued, rustic, and patinated, and each finish has a different effect. Soft, warm, bright and refined finishes that enhance the expressive potential of the most classic of materials, opening up countless design possibilities for the interior designer. It offers a selection of important flooring for high quality living rooms and terraces, as well as wall tiles, stairs, tops, carefully finished for every architectural need.

The main peculiarity of travertine, which distinguishes it from other natural stones, are the pores, which are part of its extraordinary appearance: what would be a deficiency in other stone floors is instead a unique feature in travertine slabs. Open pores or holes, sometimes large give travertine slabs a rustic, Mediterranean look.

Nothing could be more natural!

The TUMBLED finish is the one that best enhances the naturalness of Travertine. With its open pores and rounded edges, it shows a particularly rustic look that is ideal for a Mediterranean design, but it also becomes a nice contrast in minimalist settings. Usually vein-cut offers a cloudy color harmony characterized by few fluctuations and veins. Feasible sizes range from the small square of cm.10×10 to 60×60, to the Roman opus in the set consisting of 20×20 40×20 40×40 60×40 to the rectangular format 60×30 with thickness from 1 cm to 2 cm, up to 3 cm for outdoor slabs. With shades varying from beige to light brown to darker brown, it creates a vibrant and rustic effect.

PATINATO or BRUSHED travertine, on the other hand, feature a more velvety “silk” effect finish with softened edges and convey a contemporary effect in tune with current trends. POLISHED travertine is distinguished by its finely worked mirror surface, while HONED travertine is characterized by a decidedly matte and less shiny surface.

Polished, honed, brushed travertines are marked by a linear, understated and modern appearance at the same time. They are always supplied filled and usually with sawn edges and can be made in even large sizes, square or rectangular depending on personal taste and the characteristics of the room they will be covering. Grouts are made using liquid substances that once dried completely cover the holes, sealing them to perfection. Depending on the substance used resin or cement will result in a different visual effect.

This natural stone is perfect for modern living, offering elegant style in all its shapes and shades, perfectly aligning with the tastes of those who choose it. It goes well with furniture expressions that emphasize the naturalness of stone.
